Van Rollover Accident near Patterson Leaves 10 Injured
Ten people have been injured, some of them seriously, in a van rollover accident on interstate 5 near Patterson.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident occurred at 2 pm yesterday. The injured have been rushed to the hospital. The driver of the van suffered serious injuries in the crash, and is listed as being in serious condition. The remaining passengers – his wife and 8 children between 4 and 15 years of age- were also injured. The family is from Maricopa, Arizona. According to witnesses, the van suffered a tire blowout, causing it to flip over several times. Investigations are going on. Rollover accidents are some of the most dangerous crashes that can occur on California roads. Typically, rollover accidents involve SUV’s, vans, trucks, minivans and other vehicles. These vehicles seem to have a higher susceptibility to a rollover because they are designed with a higher center of gravity. A van also has a narrower tire track, which places it at a greater risk of flipping over at high speeds. In fact, the danger of rollovers is so high with these vans, that federal laws forbid the use of vans to transport school kids. A rollover accident can leave victims with devastating injuries. These accidents typically occur when a vehicle is traveling at high speeds, stops suddenly or makes a sudden turn. These sudden movements can cause a loss of balance, leading to the vehicle tipping over. In a rollover accident, the vehicle may tip over on to its side or roof. Passengers who are not wearing seatbelts are highly likely to be ejected. This can place the person at a high risk for serious injuries. These kinds of injuries are typically seen if the victim ends up under the vehicle, suffering crushing injuries. The impact of such traumas is often fatal. Rollover accidents may also be caused by tire blowouts. Rollovers caused by tire blowouts were especially frequent in the 90’s, when there were hundreds of reports of rollovers involving the Ford Explorer. These SUV’s came equipped with Firestone tires. The defective tires were found to be more susceptible to a blowout, increasing the risk of an SUV rollover. Rollovers may be more common in certain types of vehicles, but this doesn’t mean that injuries must be expected. Experts have suggested design changes to these automobiles that can reduce the risk of a rollover. However, implementing these suggestions involves huge costs that automakers have simply not been willing to take on. The result is that occupants of these vehicles continue to be at risk for serious injuries in these accidents. When you consider the fact that SUV’s are wildly popular in the US, you realize the risk to large numbers of people from continued use of these vehicles. California rollover accident lawyers would advise you to decrease your risk of injuries in a rollover accident by always wearing seatbelts, and making sure all occupants of your van are wearing seatbelts too. Electronic Stability Control systems and airbags also increase the chances of surviving an accident.
