Travis Barker Settles Plane Crash Injury Lawsuit
California aviation accident attorneys have been following closely to the litigation relating to the fatal plane last year that killed four people and injured former Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker. Barker and his friend DJ AM or Adam Goldstein suffered severe burn injuries in the crash that also killed two of their friends, as well as the two pilots on the plane. Now, Barker has settled his lawsuit against several companies he blamed from the crash. On September 19 th 2008, DJ AM, who died in August this year of a drug overdose, and Travis Barker were on a plane heading back to Los Angeles from South Carolina. As the plane taxied down the runway, one of the tires blew out. The plane went out of control, and quickly burst into flames. Two other passengers and the two pilots were killed in the crash. Barker and Goldstein spent months at burn centers recovering from their injuries. Barker and Goldstein filed lawsuits against Learjet, Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, the owners of the plane and other companies. Travis Barker’s lawsuit was filed along with the mother of Charles Monroe Still Jr., Barker’s bodyguard who was killed in the accident. Still’s mother has since reached a settlement in her lawsuit. The families of the two persons who were killed in the crash also filed separate wrongful death lawsuits against several of these companies. Complicating matters further was the death of Goldstein in August this year in what was allegedly, an accidental drug overdose. Goldstein’s mother has since his death, added a claim of wrongful death to the lawsuit against Learjet and other defendants. She claims that her son’s horrific experience in the plane crash contributed to his relapse into drug addiction, ultimately ending in his fatal overdose. The litigation process had been delayed while the National Transportation Safety Board investigation into the crash continued. The investigation found that the thrust reversers that helps slow down the plane or reverse it, were not placed in the right position to slow down the aircraft. The NTSB recommended several changes to prevent such future accidents.
One of its recommendations was changes to the design of the thrust reversers on the aircraft involved in the crash, the Learjet 60. Advancements in aviation safety means that fewer people are dying in crashes than they used to. However, nationwide the number of people killed in aviation accidents, in both commercial airliner crashes as well as private plane accidents, still continues to be too high. Most plane crashes are caused because of pilot error. Technological advancements in aviation safety have meant safer planes, but federal safety regulators have not been able to do much to deal with the issue of pilot fatigue, which is a major contributing factor in several airline crashes. California airplane accident lawyers have been especially concerned about under skilled, under experienced, and problematic pilots who continue to steer these craft across the skies. Besides pilot error, mechanical issues, bird strikes, faulty aircraft design, and air traffic controller negligence can be factors contributing to a crash.
