Football Analysts Join California Brain Injury Lawyers in Concern over Injuries
California brain injury attorneys are letting their voices be heard in the outcry against the high rates of brain injuries in professional football players and the fact that the NFL has not made any serious attempts to protect players from these injuries. Fortunately, the uproar against the fact that many professional football players are at high risk of suffering from brain injuries because of the constant head-butting they receive on the field, has now increased. According to the New York Times, sports broadcasters are also adding their voices to this concern. NBC Universal Sports, which is the broadcast partner of the National Football League, has been taking steps to suppress head crushing sound effects on football game promos. NBC Universal Sports is not alone in the steps it is taking to show sensitivity to football players who often leave the game because of the injuries they suffer. Announcers at football games have begun to use words like “injury “and “dementia” more often while taking about games. Pre-game analysis has commentators discussing football players with brain injuries. This never used to happen before. The outcry against brain injuries in NFL players has reached the highest echelons of power with a House Judiciary Committee hearing last month that forced the NFL to adopt new safety policies. Players who suffer concussions are now choosing to sit these out. Analysts and sports experts blame the “tough guy” culture that has been built around the game of American football for the high incidence of brain injuries in these games. The incidences of brain injuries were off the charts prior to the introduction of the football helmet. Since the helmet came along, there have been fewer of the serious skull fractures that used to be common before. However, players are likely to suffer from a false sense of security when they wear these helmets, and are more likely to engage in aggressive and rough head butting. While the helmets can protect against skull fractures, they can do little to
protect against minor head injuries, like concussions. Typically, football players can expect to suffer at least one concussion during a game. When a player continues to suffer from these seemingly minor concussions several times over a season, it can increase the risk of development of dementia and other brain injuries. The debate over brain injuries caused by football has meant that younger players in high schools are also becoming more concerned about their health and safety. Coaches and other authorities are becoming less likely to brush off a head injury or praise it as a sign of masculinity, and present it as the potentially debilitating brain injury it really is. We don’t live in the Roman area of gladiators anymore, and we should not be sacrificing the health of young American men by encouraging the brutal nature of a sport that has been shown to leave so many with brain injuries. These injuries markedly impact a person’s quality of life. California brain injury attorneys believe the time is right to change our overall attitude to the game and its injuries.
