California Child Killed after Injuries from Falling Television Set
Just last month, this blog discussed a new education campaign launched by the Consumer Product Safety Commission to increase awareness about injuries from accidents involving children and heavy furniture. In just such an accident, a 6-year-old child in West Covina has been killed from injuries sustained when a television fell on her. The child, who has been identified as Jasmine Starr Ilgenfritz, was apparently playing with her siblings on Saturday morning at her home. The 32-inch television set got dislodged from the table, and fell on Jasmine. She sustained serious injuries, and was rushed to the hospital, but died later.
According to the West Covina Police Department, the children were not being supervised at the time of the tragic accident. There were no witnesses to the accident. Jasmine was playing with her two siblings who are aged 1and 3. There was a grandparent who was supervising the children, but she was in another room, and did not see the accident. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, in 2006, an estimated 16,000 people were involved in accidents from furniture, including television sets, washing machines and other heavy appliances. Not surprisingly, most of the 16,000 victims were young children. These statistics were the reason behind the CPSC’s new furniture campaign, aimed at preventing injuries from television tip overs. The CPSC wants to draw particular attention to the dangers from electronic appliances like the television sets. Children can easily be injured when a large television set tips over and on them. Unfortunately, as California product liability lawyers see, these injuries can be very serious. The Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends that parents take care to secure appliances like televisions in the house. Securing these appliances is easy. The CPSC recommends simple hardware that can anchor the furniture on the floor or a table to prevent these from tipping over. This hardware is inexpensive, and easy to install. Besides television sets, children may also be exposed to injuries from washing machines and other appliances in the house. Typically the most common injuries from furniture tip over including head and brain injuries. Children who find themselves stuck under a heavy television or washing machine may also not be able to remove themselves from underneath the furniture, creating the possibility of suffocation. The agency recommends that parents secure furniture in their homes taking the following steps: Place television sets on a low table. Secure these with anchoring devices to keep them firmly on the table. Avoid placing the remote, toys and other objects on the top of televisions. Tuck electrical cords of appliances out of reach of little children. Take special care while securing flat screen televisions that may look slim, but can pack several pounds of power into their frames. These televisions must be hung on wall brackets with steady anchoring devices. Avoid keeping plasma televisions on very low tables, unanchored. Children can easily pull these sets on to themselves, resulting in heavy injuries.
